Work has begun on a £15 million development project at one of the north of England’s most prestigious, luxury hotels.

Building has commenced at The Grand Hotel & Spa in York – Yorkshire’s only 5-star hotel – that will see the award-winning venue double its number of guest rooms and open a brand new 140-seater restaurant.

Plans for the enhancements, which were submitted by the hotel’s owners, Splendid Hospitality Group, and approved by the City of York Council at the end of 2015, will see the Grade II listed building connected to the adjacent Roman House, creating over 100 additional bedrooms along with new spaces for meetings and corporate hospitality.

A new restaurant will be housed on what was formerly a terrace area. Existing guest rooms will all be refurbished and the Spa will be enlarged with the creation of additional treatment rooms. Phase I will see the opening of the new restaurant by early 2017, with the new bedrooms being completed shortly after. The current 107 guest rooms will be remodelled during 2017.

The Grand has a reputation for its first class service in an exceptional setting, so it is fantastic that we are going to be able to offer that to many more guests – both those from outside of the area and also the residents of York. We have never taken our 5-star status for granted and are always looking at ways to improve what we offer our guests, so it is wonderful that The Grand is set to become even grander through this major investment and expansion!

Maria Florou, The Grand Hotel & Spa’s General Manager

The scale of the development of The Grand demonstrates Splendid Hospitality Group’s dedication to the City of York, where it also has two other hotels – Hotel Indigo and the Holiday Inn Express. It is also a clear indication of the Group’s continued investment in this already exceptional hotel, which has won many plaudits and awards since opening in May 2010.

The Grand Hotel & Spa, York is one of the jewels in the crown of the Splendid Hospitality Group and we are proud to have such a landmark building within our portfolio. York is a stunning city and deserves the very best in its leading luxury hotel. This exciting project marks our intention to push the quality of the guest experience at The Grand even higher, positioning it as one of the UK’s very best hotels.

Stuart Bailey, CEO of Splendid Hospitality Group

Leading the work is Keighley-based RN Wooler & Co Ltd, alongside architects McKenzie Wheeler. McKenzie Wheeler return to The Grand following their key role in the original conversion of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters. The team is completed Arcacia Consulting, Consarc Design Group, Twenty2 Degrees Design Partnership, Phillips Page Associates, and Walsh.
